Melanotan 1

  • Form: Lyophilized powder
  • Purity: >99%

Overview

Melanotan 1 is a synthetic peptide analog of alpha-melanocyte–stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It is composed of 13 amino acids, the same as α-MSH, but differs by two substitutions: methionine and L-phenylalanine at the fourth and seventh positions are replaced with norleucine and D-phenylalanine. These modifications are thought to increase receptor affinity and extend half-life. Melanotan 1 has been studied for its potential to stimulate melanocortin receptors (MCRs) and promote eumelanin production, contributing to photoprotection and pigmentation.

Research Background

Eumelanin is a pigment that may protect skin and tissues from UV-induced damage. Research suggests Melanotan 1 mimics the natural activity of α-MSH but with greater stability and stronger binding to melanocortin 1 receptors (MC1R). This may enhance melanin production and lead to increased pigmentation even in the absence of sunlight exposure.

Mechanism of Interest

  • MC1R activation: Melanotan 1 is thought to preferentially bind to melanocortin 1 receptors, promoting melanin synthesis.
  • cAMP signaling: Activation of MC1R may trigger cAMP production, which stimulates microphthalmia transcription factor (MITF) expression and the enzymes necessary for eumelanin synthesis.
  • Photoprotection: Increased eumelanin production may protect tissues from UV damage and oxidative stress.
