MOTS-c 10mg

  • Form: Lyophilized powder
  • Purity: >99%

Overview

MOTS-c (mitochondrial open-reading-frame of the 12S rRNA-c) is a short peptide composed of 16 amino acids and classified as a mitochondria-derived peptide (MDP). It is expressed in tissues and plasma, functioning both as a cell-specific compound and as a circulating “mitochondrial hormone” or mitokine. MOTS-c has been studied for its potential roles in regulating energy metabolism, stress response, and cellular adaptation.

Research Background

Only two mitochondrial-derived peptides have been studied in detail: Humanin and MOTS-c. Research suggests that under metabolic stress, MOTS-c may translocate to the nucleus and influence gene expression, including antioxidant response pathways. MOTS-c expression appears to decline with age, leading researchers to investigate its role in aging, metabolic regulation, and insulin sensitivity. Physical activity may increase endogenous MOTS-c levels, hinting at its connection to exercise-induced metabolic benefits.

Mechanism of Interest

  • AMPK activation: Suggested to stimulate AMP-activated protein kinase, enhancing glucose uptake and lipid utilization.
  • Gene regulation: May interact with genes containing antioxidant response elements (ARE), influencing transcription factors such as NRF2.
  • Metabolic balance: Investigated for effects on the folate–methionine cycle and purine biosynthesis, potentially shifting cellular priorities between anabolic and catabolic processes.
  • Systemic effects: Animal studies indicate potential improvements in insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism, skeletal muscle performance, and protection against diet-induced obesity.
