Semax

  • Form: Lyophilized powder
  • Purity: >99%

Overview

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide analog of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). It is derived from the ACTH fragment (4–7): Met–Glu–His–Phe with the addition of a Pro–Gly–Pro (PGP) sequence at the C-terminus. This modification is believed to increase stability and enhance blood–brain barrier (BBB) permeability. Semax has been studied for potential nootropic, neuroprotective, and neuroregenerative effects.

Research Background

Developed in Russia, Semax has been studied for decades as a potential treatment for cognitive decline, ischemic injury, and neurological dysfunction. Research suggests it may influence neurotransmitter systems, enhance memory, and protect neurons from oxidative damage. Its PGP extension is thought to improve CNS penetration compared to unmodified ACTH fragments.

Mechanism of Interest

  • Enkephalin regulation: Suggested to inhibit enkephalin-degrading enzymes, increasing levels of these endogenous opioids involved in stress and nociception.
  • Neurotransmitter modulation: Reported to enhance serotonergic activity via increased 5-HIAA levels and to sensitize dopaminergic systems without directly altering dopamine concentration.
  • Neuroprotection: Proposed to reduce oxidative stress and promote neuronal survival and plasticity.
  • Cognitive function: Investigated for improvements in memory, learning, and recovery from neurological injury.
